A question you need to ask yourself when you are raising $12,000 to leave everything you know behind and travel into the unfamiliar with strangers for nine months.
"Why am I doing this?" or "What is the point?"
Whether they realize it or not, everyone I talk to tells me their idea of why I am doing this.
Me: "I am leaving next month for a nine month mission trip"
Them: "Oh that is so wonderful of you"
Or: "wow this is going to be such a great experience"
Or: "I wish I had seen the world when I was your age"
What they are saying to me is either (a) I am a great person for going to feed the hungry and build houses for the poor, (b) I am going to learn so much by seeing how the rest of the world lives, or (c) I am lucky to be able to travel the world on other peoples expense.
While I do admit that I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to see the world, and I definitely will learn so much by seeing the poverty in the world, those are not the reasons of why I am going.
So to answer your question, and mine, of why am I doing this, its simple. Because He, the great I am, has asked me to. He doesn't NEED me to. The creator of heaven and earth does not need me for anything! He simply has given me an invitation, that I have accepted. An invitation to draw closer to Him, so see him so blatantly alive, working in the hearts of people all over this beautiful planet. An invitation to be a part of something beyond my wildest dreams. And I am so excited to have accepted!
